FULL-COLOR SUMMER FOLK TRAILS GUIDE: thousands of copies will be distributed free through chambers of commerce, local and state visitors centers, tourism offices, participating businesses and direct mail

 

BANNER: participating establishments will receive a distinctive Summer Folk banner to identify and advertise your facility as a Summer Folk site.

Throughout the 2012 tourist season, Penobscot Marine Museum will spearhead a series of Summer Folk exhibits, events, programs and presentations focusing on tourism from 1890 to 1960. We invite businesses, nonprofits and government agencies in the Penobscot Bay region to join us in a program of cooperative marketing initiatives. You must meet either of these simple qualifications:

» your business or facility was active prior to 1960
or
» you will offer a Summer Folk themed product or service

Join One of Four Tourist Trails

SUMMER FOLK FARE TRAIL—open to food and drink establishments. Participation suggestions: Summer Folk Specials (prix fixe meals or individual menu items based on old-time recipes); antique décor or place settings; antique waitstaff uniforms; Summer Folk pricing from 1960 or earlier; Summer Folk art or photography exhibits

SUMMER FOLK LODGING TRAIL—open to hotels, motels, B&Bs, motor courts. Participation suggestions: antique room décor and furnishings; Summer Folk teas; croquet or badminton; art or photo exhibits

SUMMER FOLK FUN TRAIL—open to venues for entertainment, amusement and activities, e.g., golf/mini-golf, theaters, bowling, boating, windjammers. Participation suggestions: old-rules games; antique sports equipment; old films or shows; special Summer Folk pricing from 1960 or earlier

SUMMER FOLK SIGHTS TRAIL—open to museums, historical societies, historic homes, parks, and places that tourists came to see prior to 1960. Participation suggestions: themed exhibits, tours, talks, lectures, presentations, activities

Want to join in but “don’t know much about history”? Penobscot Marine Museum can help research old recipes, décor, entertainments, activities and more. We’ll even help you host your own Summer Folk photography exhibit with historic images from our archives that you can keep for display (reproduction fee required).



We’ll Set the Stage with a Full Schedule of Events and Exhibits

Penobscot Marine Museum will be a Summer Folk anchor throughout 2012 with a comprehensive program of exhibits and events on and around the campus that may include:

  • main exhibit of period artifacts, ephemera and photography
  • historic film footage shot by tourists from decades past
  • replica lodging facilities
  • recreational watercraft exhibit
  • children’s model pond with working sailboat models
  • croquet court
  • arts & crafts workshops
  • walking tours
  • vintage-rules baseball game
  • rowboat livery
  • lecture series
