Maine and the Oriental Trade
Maine ships and sailors were at the fore in the 19th century trade with China and Japan, helping establish the United States as a world trading power. Staff from our education department will discuss trade patterns and the trade goods that flowed both ways across the oceans. Contact Betty Schopmeyer: 207-548-2529 ext. 206
Maine's Windjammers
Maine's modern, passenger-carrying windjammer fleet grew directly out of a centuries-old tradition of coastal shipping in sloops and schooners. Today, the windjammers are a potent symbol of Maine and an important component of its tourist economy. Contact Cipperly Good: 207-548-2529 ext. 212.

Creative Shadowboxes for Adults

Dioramas or shadowboxes were a popular form of folk art in the 19th century. They can tell a story, honor a person or event, focus on a theme or be abstract in nature. Each participant will create a unique diorama using a variety of techniques and materials, including collage, assemblage, sculpture, painting, and lettering. Have fun "Inside the Box" and let your imagination guide you. We will provide a variety of materials, and participants may bring their own. All levels of experience can be accommodated.
