(November 24, 2010) Celebrate the holiday season with a tree lighting, crafts, book signings by Maine authors, a photography exhibit and more at the Yule Revel at Penobscot Marine Museum. The event takes place December 10 at the museum's Admission Center, 40 E. Main Street, Searsport.
Starting at 4:30, the museum will present children's stories and crafts, and book signings with local authors. Children will make a mitten ornament that they can hang at home, and refreshments will be served – all free.
Maine authors who will be on hand to sign and discuss their books are: marine photographer Benjamin Mendlowitz and boating writer Maynard Bray (The Book of Wooden Boats, vol.III); boat designer Chuck Paine (My Yacht Designs – And the Lessons They Taught Me); painter Loretta Krupinski (Looking Astern: An Artist's View of Maine's Working Waterfronts); naturalist Catherine Schmitt (A Coastal Companion: A Gulf of Maine Almanac); historian William Bunting (Live Yankees: The Sewalls and Their Ships); sea-glass expert Carole Lambert (Sea Glass Hunter's Handbook); and children's author Mary Morton Cowan (Captain Mac: The Life of Donald Baxter MacMillan, Arctic Explorer).
There will also be an exhibit of photography including works by Benjamin Mendlowitz; items from the museum's collections of historic local photography; and selections from the popular student exhibit "Then And Now," which pairs historic photos of local places with those same scenes as they appear today.
At 6:30, the town will light its holiday tree on the museum's front lawn, and caroling is expected. The Admission Center will remain open as a place to warm up with hot cocoa and cookies provided by Bangor Savings Bank. The event continues until 7:30, when the Penobscot Bay Singers will present a holiday concert in the Searsport Congregational Church, 8 Church St.
