Free Fun On Penobscot Bay Day
Live Music, Guided Tours, Sea Creatures, Crafts, Cake All Part of 75th Anniversary Event

The trio From Away Downeast will perform sea chanteys on Penobscot Bay Day.

July 6, 2011 – Free admission, live music, guided tours and birthday cake are just some of the fun planned for Penobscot Bay Day at Penobscot Marine Museum, July 23. In celebration of its 75th anniversary, the museum will host nonstop events and exhibits for all ages from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Penobscot Bay Day will mark the grand opening of the museum's Seabag Visible Storage Center. Seabag is an innovative display and research facility that makes hundreds of additional artifacts available to public view. Visitors may use the facility's database to learn more about any item on display. An opening ceremony is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

Also among the day's featured activities will be a free concert of sea chanteys performed by the trio From Away Downeast. The group will play and sing traditional music of sailors and the sea from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. and from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Other activities throughout the day will include:

  • Guided tours of museum exhibits
  • Craft activities for children
  • Marine touch-tank sessions. Handle starfish, mussels, snails, clams and other sea creatures native to Maine's coastal waters.
  • Tours of the 1902 interior of First Congregational Church, including its 1,100-pipe organ and outstanding stained-glass windows
  • A silent auction of original works of art produced for ShipShapes, the museum's community art project
  • Birthday cake for all

Children are encouraged to come in nautical costume. Sailors, mermaids, fishermen, sea captains, lobsters, pirates, and other marine characters are all welcome.
