Penobscot Bay Day Offers Free Family Fun, Music And Learning
July 16, 2010 -- The second Penobscot Bay Day is scheduled for July 24 at Penobscot Marine Museum. The event runs from 10 am to 4 pm and includes crafts, music, demonstrations and presentations for children and adults. Admission is free, with donations encouraged.
Throughout the day, master canoe maker Steve Cayard will demonstrate the art of birchbark canoe building, and finished birchbark canoes will be on display, along with the rest of the museum's small craft collection. Members of Maine's Native American tribes will exhibit and sell a variety of crafts.

Musicians Stephen and Susan Sanfilippo will perform a concert of sea chanteys as part of Penobscot Bay Day, July 24 at Penobscot Marine Museum.
At 1:00 and 3:00, musicians and marine historians Stephen and Susan Sanfilippo will perform a concert of sea chanteys, including whaling songs collected by Joanna Colcord, a member of the prominent Searsport seafaring family that helped found the museum.
Curator Cipperly Good will give an illustrated presentation on Maine's windjammers at 11:00 and 2:30. Visitors can also see "Earning Their Keep," the museum's popular windjammer exhibit.
Children can make several craft projects and bring their completed projects home. Kids can paint their own lobster buoy, make a model lighthouse, and build a marine shadowbox or diorama from art materials and small objects. Children can also touch and hold live sea creatures in the marine acquarium "touch-tank" and participate in activities and games in the museum's Marine Science Lab.
All events will be free, with donations encouraged. Refreshments will be available.
