History Conference 2008

The Jacob Pike

Looking at Our Waterfront Through Time

Penobscot Marine Museum’s annual History Conference was held October 24 and 25, 2008. This year the theme was “The Working Waterfront.”

Friday evening featured a roundtable discussion of the life and times of the Jacob Pike, the museum’s historic sardine carrier. Friday evening also included a chowder supper and old-time fiddling featuring museum trustee, Ralph Stanley.

Saturday’s agenda, which included a catered lunch, began with a talk by archeologist Dr. Stephen Cox on Native Americans’ historic use of Maine’s waterfront. Dr. Cox’s presentation was followed by several additional speakers on different aspects of the working waterfront over time including:

  • Jon Johanson, publisher of Maine Coastal News, presenting information and images on Maine boat builders and shops.
  • Jerry Kaplan, Penobscot Marine Museum volunteer presenting images of Carroll Thayer Berry.
