Penobscot Bay History Online
Educational Resource
Penobscot Bay History Online is our dedicated education website. Students and teachers can learn about maritime history and culture in nine education modules; search our collections to support student research projects; use our glossary to help understand maritime terminology; and read the journal of a 16-year-old boy who sailed from Belfast to California and back in 1866. The site provides information aligning each chapter with the most relevant Maine State Learning Results, both 1997 and 2007 versions.
Coming Soon: Several additions to the website are in process: Faces of a Maritime Town is a new chapter drawing on the experiences of sea captains and their wives, often in their own words, and will include many new images. Another journal, that of the coolie master on a Maine ship carrying Chinese coolies to Cuba in 1861, will be found under Special Features.
