2008 Maine Folk Art Trail Summer Exhibit
What's Folk Art? Visitors to PMM next summer will have a chance to answer that question. PMM is one of the eleven museums selected to participate in the Maine Folk Art Trail project next summer. Eleven Maine museums ranging from fine art to historic houses will be presenting Maine's best folk art, objects whose creators had little to no academic training. Maine's eastern coast is lean
country and most pieces were primarily utilitarian: there was little time or resources for the pure decorative.
PMM's presentation will draw both from the museum's collection as well as have loans from private collections and other local
institutions. Some objects already on view will stay as part of a museum wide folk art trail. Others will be moved to the special
exhibit in the Douglas and Margaret Carver Memorial Art Gallery.
The exhibit will include needlework, scrimshaw, and figureheads, objects usually considered folk art.
But it will also have boats, models, tools and containers. Come see. Read more>>
