April 21

Pleasant throughout, Coolies on deck quiet & Contented. Washing & Cleaned below & Chloride of lime as usual. Gave food as per memorandum. Coolies behave well. Sick coolies about the same – No. 300 no better. No. 183 about the same, both of these Coolies seem to swelling gradually. No. 276 bad with worms & have 2 large worms off of his Stomach today. Several others sick, not very bad. Doctor gave some coolies vomitive this morning. Weather getting warm. Pretty warm below. Wind aft. Coolie No. 166 seems to be improving slowly. Stopped putting rum in water for coolies use as it made it sour & unfit for use.

 

April 22nd

Pleasant throughout. Coolies quiet and contented. On deck as usual. Sick coolies about the same. Coolie No. 276 seems little better. No. 322 about the same. He is troubled with piles & worms. No. 173 is pretty sick. Yellow appearance. No. 300 & 183 seems No better. Few other light cases. Doctor among the coolies about all the time now. Cleaned Deck below as usual. Gave food as per Memorandum. Food cooked well. The Salt Fish is getting bad. Bitter. Give coolies Fresh vegetables once a day. Salt once. Prisoners yet in irons, and are very healthy. Excess of eating I think is the production of Number of coolies getting sick. Most all coolies with the exception of the sick are fat ____ are improving greatly in appearance since we left Macao. Weather getting warm. Coolies allowed to go below out of the sun at Midday. Gave coolies tobacco today.

 

April 23rd

Pleasant throughout. Coolies quiet and contented. Cleaned below, &. Sick coolies about the same in appearance. Coolies washing & cleaning themselves today. Saw several ships & the Island of Ferdinando NoronhaIsland of Ferdinando Noronha

A group of 21 islands in the Atlantic Ocean, 220 miles off the coast of Brazil. Discovered by the Portuguese in 1503.
Weather comfortable as there has been a good breeze through the day. Gave coolies food as per Memorandum. Sick coolies have what they require. No. 300 was punctured in the feet. Took considerable water from him.

 

April 24th

Rainy squally weather throughout. Coolies quiet and contented, pretty warm weather, warm below. Cleaned deck and sprinkled chloride lime as usual. Sick Coolies about the same. No. 300 improving, No. 183 worse. No. 377 better. No. 322 about the same. This morning Coolie No. 383 died very suddenly. Not been on the Doctor’s book for a week and then was on for a vomitive. Don’t know what was the matter with him. Some others slightly ill. Gave food as per memorandum. Food cooked well. Sick coolies have what they Require. Buried Coolie No. 383 at 8 A.m.

 

April 25

Rainy & Pleasant at intervals. Coolies on deck, &. Cleaned below, &. Very warm below. Put vinegar & Lime below. Gave coolies vinegar & water to wash mouths this morning. At 9 A.m. coolie No. 183 died. He has been sick a long time We gave him up as a dead man some time ago. Buried him. Moderate breeze but pretty warm. Coolies quiet but pretty warm for them. Sick coolies about the Same as yesterday. They have what they require. Gave food as per memorandum. Food cooked well.

 

April 26th

Pleasant throughout. Coolies quiet and contented. Crossed the line today. Pretty warm below & on deck. Light Breeze throughout. Cleaned deck, &. Sick coolies about the same. No. 276 crazy, had to put him in irons. And tie him. No. 300 about the same. No. 377 appears better, No. 322 same as yesterday. None of others ill. The doctor administers to their comforts as he thinks proper. Gave food as per memorandum. Food cooked well.
