Feb 26th

Light Rain first part, Latter part pleasant .Ship off Auges [?] at 4 P.M. Coolies on deck all day more or less – Coolies quiet and contented. Cleaned deck and sprinkled chloride of Lime below. Gave them food as per memorandum Good breeze through the day, pretty cool below considering the weather. 4 coolies a light-punishment for fighting below. Coolies on the average behave very well.

 

Feb 27th

Pleasant throughout – Coolies more or less on deck, &. Sick coolies improving fast. Opium seems to be almost exausted (sic) among the coolies. Gave them food as per memorandum. Gave them Bean Soup with a little rice & sugar instead of tea this afternoon at dinner. Good breeze throughout. Not very hot below considering the weather; pretty cool, during the day – food cooked very well.

 

Feb 28th

Pleasant throughout. Good number of coolies on deck through the day. Coolies quiet and contented – No coolies very sick, all then can eat plenty. Gave food as per memorandum. Good breeze, very comfortable weather. No fighting among the coolies today. Cleaned deck and sprinkled chloride of lime below. Fumigated the hospital with tar – lost sight of land today –

 

March 1st

Rainy, Squally weather throughout – intervals of dry weather. Good number of coolies on deck through the day. Quite a sea on. Number of the coolies sea sick. Cleaned between decks, &. Some of the cooks sick – Gave the prisoners vegetables today – very comfortable below. Coolies quiet and contented – Gave them food as per memorandum.

 

March 2nd

First Part pleasant, latter part rainy. Coolies recovering from sea sickness. Moderate breeze throughout. About ½ of the coolies on deck during the pleasant weather. Cleaned deck below and sprinkled chloride of lime fore & aft. One of the Coolies sick from the effects of opium. Few coolies have a light fever. Weather cool and very comfortable below. Gave coolies food as per memorandum.

 

March 3rd

Rainy first part, latter part fine. Coolies good, number on deck through the day. Coolies consume about the usual quantity of rice--600 lbs. Sick coolies improving. Cleaned deck below. Light airs and pretty warm below. Coolies quiet and contented – Rice cooked well. Gave the Prisoners vegetable with their Rice. Gave coolies food as per Memorandum.

 

March 4th

Pleasant throughout. Coolies quiet and contented. Sick coolies about the same. ½ to 2/3 of coolies on deck through the day, washing & cleaning themselves. Gave the coolies food as per Memorandum. Consumed the largest quantity rice today which does not come quite up with the allowance. Distributed Tobacco/Package to each mess today. Food cooked well. Coolie No. 2 was liberated today and sent below.

 

March 5th

Pleasant throughout. Coolies all quiet. Report by the spies say that some of the coolies are talking about liberating the Prisoners from their irons. But do not hear anything ourselves. Weather warm. Cleaned deck below and sprinkled chloride Lime. Burned tar in Hospital. Coolie No. 156 is pretty sick – opium all gone. Good number of Coolies on deck through the day washing themselves. Whitewashed below in several places with Lime. Food cooked very well – Gave several coolies light punishment for fighting.

 

March 6th

Pleasant throughout – Coolies quiet and contented. Good number of coolies on deck. Coolie No. 156 very sick--hove up a number of wormsAscariasis

“Hove up a number of worms” probably refers to ascariasis, a human disease in which a large kind of parasitic roundworm (nematode) is present in the intestines. It can be vomited up or passed in stools.

Mumps can include painful swelling of the salivary glands, painful testicular swelling, and rash.
