March 7th

Pleasant with a strong breeze throughout – very comfortable below – Coolies on deck through the day. Sick coolies about the same. No. 156 about the same. Hove up more worms. Cannot get him to talk – Cleaned deck below &. Prisoners yet in irons. Gave them food as per memorandum. Number of coolies with a light fever. Doctor sick – one man sick seems to be sick from the effects of opium. Doctor sick from the effects of drinking too much of the rum what was put on board for coolies use. Cannot attend to his business. Captain took the liquor away from him.

 

March 8th

Pleasant throughout. Strong breeze. Coolies quiet and contented. Number of coolies with hot skin, light fever. Very comfortable below. Cleaned deck below, &. Coolie No. 156 appears to be improving – Doctor Sick – Prisoners yet in irons – Gave them food as per memorandum. Some coolies sea sick. Moved all sick coolies to the forward part of between decks by the forward hatch. None of the sick seem to be dangerous. Number of Coolies with mumps.

 

March 9th

Pleasant throughout – Strong Breeze. Coolies quiet and contented – Number of sick coolies. Coolie No.156 about the same. One of the coolies—No.150--appeared to be very sick with yellow jaundice. Cleaned deck below and sprinkled Chloride of Lime. Very comfortable below. Weather cool. Gave food as per memorandum Coolies with Mumps about the same. Find the fresh vegetables below are decaying, find it advisable to use them as soon as possible and hold on to the Salt & Bread.

 

March 10th

Pleasant throughout. Cool weather. Coolies quiet & contented. Coolie No. 156 appears little better. Coolie No. 150 died at Sundown from the effects of opium. Buried him. Cleaned out below and sprinkled Chloride Lime. Sick coolies about the same, some improving. Gave them food as per memorandum. Very comfortable below. Good number of coolies on deck through the day. Number of coolies appear to be sick or ailing from the effects of opium. Their opium all gone.

 

March 11th

Pleasant throughout – Cool weather. Coolies quiet & Contented. Good number of Coolies on deck through the day – Cleaned deck and Sprinkled lime below. Coolie No. 261 died today at 5 P.M. from effects of opium, his opium having been exhausted some time – Buried him – A number of coolies sick from same cause. Coolies with fever & mumps seem to be improving. Gave food as per memorandum. No. 156 about the same. Very Comfortable below. Food cooked well. Doctor seems to be a little better.

 

March 12th

Pleasant throughout. Coolies quiet and Contented – Good number of Coolies through the day on deck. Cleaned deck below & sprinkled chloride Lime. 55 coolies on sick list – No. 156 about the same. 6 Coolies sick from the effects of opium took vomitiveVomitive

– one discharged 10 worms. They seem to appear some better. Gave food as per memorandum. Doctor better. Food cooked well. One Coolie, No. 73, covered with veneral (sic) [venereal] Venereal

sores. Good breeze & Cool weather. Very Cool below.

 

March 13th

Pleasant throughout – Coolies quiet and Contented. Good number of Coolies on deck through the day – Cleaned below & about the same number of Coolies on sick list – Some improving. No.156 about the same. Others about the same. Gave them food as required. Opium Coolies much the same. Good breeze throughout – Cool weather. Food cooked well. Gave Coolies 705 lbs. Rice today – largest amount used yet. All consumed. Gave one Coolie light punishment for lying about some money. Coolies on the whole behave very well. Doctor improving, sick coolies came on deck and he examined their complaint.
